The quintessential work clock has got to be the wall clock. An oxymoron, a wall clock is just that. It’s a clock which is displayed on the wall. In terms of popularity, this would be the most noticeable type of clock, being larger than the desk or table top clock.
Nowadays, wall clocks come in all shapes and sizes. One air force general I know even had a wall clock made which design was from a plane’s propeller blade. Instead of a clock face, the numbers were connected to the center of the blade. The propeller blade was about three feet long, and it was hanging atop the sliding door leading to the dining area. A stickler for punctuality, that air force general had more wall clocks than walls.
There are lots of variations of the wall clock. They range from pendulum driven wall clocks, small diameter and large diameter wall clocks. These could be electric powered, battery powered or pendulum and weight driven.
Large diameter wall clocks are larger than 23 inches in diameter. Anything smaller is, of course, called a small-diameter wall clock.
The most common type of wall clock would be battery powered quartz wall clocks. The most common design would be round, with a black frame, and a white clock face and easy to read numbers. Of course the number of possible design for wall clocks is bounded only by human creativity.
Increasing in popularity are wall clocks framed in paintings as well as unique installation art type of wall clocks. There are a lot of artisans who make these clocks by hand and sell them directly via the internet. The allure of these hand-made one-of-a-kind creations is the artistry and creativity of each wall clock. The selling point is that these pieces are more of art works than time pieces.
Currently the more upscale (and expensive) wall clocks are pendulum-driven wall clocks from Herman Miller, Ridgeway and Kienenger. These are practically heirloom material from the moment you buy them. With their quality, it is no wonder that these pendulum-driven wall clocks would outlive any battery powered or electric powered wall clock.
