Antique Clocks

Time’s Up! What if we suddenly ran out of time?

For most people time is a relative term of concept. It is in fact one of the most gruesome debate topics or issues: that time and space is curbed, that time travel is possible, or that time does not really exist.

Man is in fact so obsessed with the concept of time that he always carries with him a reminder of much or how little he has of it. He wears a watch on his wrist, or a pocket watch dangling from a chain. He decorates his home with time pieces of all shapes and sizes- practically adorning each room and each corner.

From this obsession with time perhaps sprung the hobby of clock collection. Surprisingly, there are a growing number of time piece enthusiasts who not only display and gather an impressive collection of clocks – they even travel across countries or exhaust online sales and flea markets for precious pieces of vintage clocks.

Yes vintage clocks, a souvenir of time from an era or period that has already gone by. Quite ironic or symbolic depending on how one views it, but the fact remains that vintage clocks nowadays are viewed and appreciated for more than just mere sentimental value. Vintage clocks are perceived by collectors as pieces of art – they take the time and spend good money tracking down specific items crafted by vintage clock masters.

How so, you may ask? Bear in mind that centuries and even as recent as decades ago, ornate time pieces were custom-made and often hand-crafted by skilled master. As in any other art form, these vintage clocks carried a unique finger print of both the craftsman who created the vintage clock as well as his milieu – the mood or atmosphere prevalent during the time the piece was designed.

Most importantly, the fact that these vintage clocks are hand made means each one is unique. Although they may sport a similar design or look – no two vintage clocks are exactly the same. And, it is the quest to collect as many or as varied a set of these vintage time pieces that fuels the vintage clock collector’s dreams.

For vintage clock lovers, completing a period or theme collection is tantamount to having travel through time and returning to tell the story to others.
