Just because these old clocks have stood the test of time doesn’t mean we should let it become decrepit as it ages. The fact that it’s still functioning in the present day and age should be a clear sign for us owners that it requires more care and attention.

Old clocks, or vintage clocks, as they are called by collectors are not disposable time pieces. They are far too valuable and precious to be simply thrown out or cast off the moment they start moving out of sync or when they don’t match the house’s current theme or decor.
Old clocks carry with them more history and charm than one can ever think possible. And, specially if the old clock is a family heirloom or a gift from a family member of loved one who has passed on, the old clock will forever serve as a reminder of how special this person was once in our lives.
So how do you begin taking care of your old clocks? Is there such a thing as a proper or improper way of cleaning it? What are the common problems these old clocks may have?
These are just some of the concerns you would have to think about if you come in possession of an old clock, more if the piece you inherit or buy is one of very great value.
First off, take a look at the material or casing of the old clock. Is it made of wood, marble, or one with an adamantine veneer such as those crafted by clock master Seth Smith?
A careful look at the material will give you a good idea on what type and kind of cleaning substance and implements to use. Wood finished old clocks are best cleaned with a soft cotton or wool fabric. Polish may or may not be applied. However, if you wish to “restore” an old clock for display purposes, you may apply a very light coat of varnish to brighten up the surface.
In addition, try to check if the main parts of the old clock are working well. Some of the common problems of old time pieces include inaccurate time – either because the hands get stuck together, or the old clock is not set up properly.
Be careful though, troubleshooting problems of old clocks is not a job for amateurs. Leave opening and adjusting the internal parts of old clocks to the experts.
