To many onlookers, an old clock is just a clock – something that tic-tocks to tell time. But for many antique clock collectors, a clock is more than a simple timepiece, it is something substantial and larger than life. This is the reason why antique clocks are quite expensive nowadays. Because of their uniqueness, antique clocks cost thousands of dollars, which cost a certified clock collector will not heed anyway. What every other common person would never understand is that these elegant, rare pieces are valued for their unique intricacy and that the workmanship can never be duplicated again.
One of the most famous types of clocks are the grandfather and grandmother clocks. These are clocks known for their size and ornamented clock faces and wood work. Grandmother clocks are slim, spring-driven dome tops with an 8” or less square or arch brass dial. Grandfather clocks on the other hand, for weight-driven, with a dome-top or swan neck, with a defined grandfather shape, and a 10” dial. Sometimes sizes may vary, but the characteristic shape remains. The movements created within these two structures were also designed to play chimes. There are also smaller clocks of the same shape and built, which are called granddaughter clocks. Clocks would generally be categorized as such when they are less than 5’2”. Most of the clocks made during the early centuries had round, electroplated silver dials, with numbers that have been painted on instead of engraved or inscribed. This makes the materials that were used then to be of substandard quality, because they were really just simple clocks at that time.
During the time that they were built, they were rather ordinary and normally priced, compared to how they are valued today. There are newer clock companies building grandfather and grandmother clocks, but most of their pieces would be priced lower than those which were made by the older and defunct clock-making companies, whose names are now institutions for antique clock collectors. However, it is right to say that antique grandfather and grandmother clocks are still priced relatively moderately today, not too expensive but not cheap, when compared to the other rarer and more unique clock types.
